About Me
I’m Simon, a 31 year old husband, father and bioinformatician, in something approaching that order. I work at Newcastle University, in the Bioinformatics Support Unit. We (that is Daniel Swan and I) provide analysis services for life science researchers (and some other disciplines too) across the University. My main responsibility is, on paper, to support proteomics research, but in practice I take on all kinds of work. A developmental biologist/geneticist by training, I like the fact that my job keeps me in touch with ‘real’ scientists.
I live in Gateshead with my wife and son, we enjoy visiting Washington Wildfowl and Wetland Trust, and Tynemouth Blue Reef Aquarium, among other local sites. When we get the chance we scarper to explore the marvellous British countryside, from the Lake District to the wild and beautiful Northumberland coast.
I enjoy mucking about with computers in my spare time and am lucky enough to get to spend my work days doing the same. After many naive years as a Windows user, I now use Mac OS X where possible, and Linux where not (Ubuntu is current distro of choice). I also try to be a good advocate for FOSS and Open Science. Note that all content on my sites is freely distributed under a Creative Commons License, where possible.
